Milk Thistle has a long standing reputation for helping to relieve liver problems
A liver cleanse is a great way of supporting this hard-working organ.
What does my liver do?
Your liver is a wonderful organ and is essential to your good health. It works away tirelessly filtering any toxins that you have absorbed or ingested before allowing nutrients to move into your blood stream.
It’s the largest organ in your body and performs a number of functions including metabolising carbohydrates and proteins. It also stores vitamins and minerals, helps excrete toxic substances from your blood, and produces bile to help you to digest and absorb fats.
It’s also the only organ in your body that is capable of repairing itself. This does depend on how badly your liver may be damaged. For example in cases such as cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol abuse this is unlikely.
Why do I need a liver cleanse?
During your lifetime, the liver has to deal with a wide range of toxins, chemicals and contaminants that we come into contact with. It does a wonderful job of filtering most of them out of our systems for the most part. However, it can become overburdened making the body less effective at being able to store, break down and excrete the toxins from our systems. It’s thought that by the time you reach around 40 years of age you have accumulated so many toxins that the effectiveness of your liver may have reduced by between 20% and 40%.
Signs that your liver is not functioning at peak efficiency may include digestive disorders, weight gain, constipation and nausea. Other signs include skin disorders such as eczema and dermatitis, and / or the appearance of age or liver spots. You may also feel bloated or sluggish and have trouble concentrating. In extreme cases the skin can actually turn yellow, known as jaundice.
